Message from TIA President Roger Dow

As 2007 draws to a close, I want to extend my deepest thanks to all of you in the state and territory tourism offices for your significant leadership and support of the Travel Industry Association during the past year.  These are challenging and exciting times for our industry, and I personally appreciate the commitment and engagement of the state tourism offices through NCSTD in helping TIA position tourism as a key component in the economic engine that will drive our country's future.  With your help, we've accomplished a lot in 2007 and will do even more in 2008.  Best wishes to you all for a safe, joyous holiday season and a successful New Year.

TLS 2008 Dates Announced!

Mark your calendars for the 3rd Annual Travel Leadership Summit, September 24 & 25, 2008 in Washington, DC.  The final details are being worked out and more information will be available early in the New Year.  The Travel Leadership Summit brings together several hundred travel industry executives to seek Congressional support for legislative initiatives important to travel and tourism.  After TLS 2007, the Travel Promotion Act had more than double the number of co-sponsors in the Senate and House.  TLS is a critical part of helping policymakers to better understand and appreciate the importance of travel to our nation.

Congress Passes Key Travel Legislation

On December 19, Congress passed legislation that is critical to the travel and tourism industry.  The travel system reform provisions included in the sections of the bill that fund the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Department of State include:

  • $40 million for the "Model Ports" program;
  • 200 new U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers;
  • establishment of an International Registered Traveler program;
  • $26 million for an electronic travel authorization program to determine in advance of travel the eligibility of a foreign visitor to the U.S.;
  • enhancements to the US-VISIT program;
  • $5 million for mobile consular teams;
  • $225 million for the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative.

These provisions are in addition to legislation signed into law by the President earlier this year that will expand the visa waiver program.

U.S. and China Sign Travel Pact

On December 11, the U.S. Commerce Department announced an agreement with China that adds the U.S. to a list of approved destinations for group travel from China.  The agreement also enables U.S. destinations to market directly in China.  Commerce Department officials say the agreement, which will take effect in the spring, will result in about 580,000 Chinese arrivals annually by 2011, up 78% from current numbers.

Ongoing and Upcoming NCSTD Surveys

The most recent issue of the Survey of U.S. State & Territory Travel Information Center Programs was just released.  An electronic copy of the report in PDF format is now available for download from the NCSTD Online Resource Center.  To access the report, go to the NCSTD password-protected section of the website and log in using your TIA membership user ID and password.

The annual Survey of U.S. State and Territory Tourism Office Budgets is wrapping up.  Following receipt of information from a few remaining states, it is anticipated that the report will be published in February.

Early in the New Year, two new surveys will be initiated:  the survey of tourism offices structure and operations, and the survey of tourism office website practices.  The latter will be conducted in partnership with the National Laboratory for Tourism and eCommerce (NLTeC) at Temple University.  TIA has entered into a five-year contract with NLTeC to evaluate state and territory website practices for 2007, 2009 and 2011.  In addition, NLTeC will develop an archive of all data collected as part of this partnership as well as previous TIA initiated studies.  The archive will be available to state and territory tourism offices as well as to Temple University students for study purposes.

Surveys Reveal Travel Issues a Priority with Voters

Surveys commissioned by the Travel Industry Association, National Tour Association and Travel Business Roundtable, reveal that voters want presidential candidates to address travel and tourism issues and make them a priority.  The surveys of likely voters in Florida and South Carolina reveal that travel issues are of significant importance to the electorate.  Eight out of 10 surveyed say travel is important to their lives and the lives of their families, and 70 percent think it is possible to reduce wait times and still maintain the same level of security at airports.

Changes Announced to State of the Industry

TIA has announced that its annual State of the Travel Industry Luncheon will not be held in 2008.  The TIA leadership will present a public statement regarding its agenda for the year, but has decided not to use its limited resources to create and manage a 500-person event as a platform for the announcement.  The event is not being permanently canceled, but rather a decision will made from year-to-year on the most appropriate format and venue for the announcement.
